The Confucius Institute Participated in “Foreign Language Day” at University of the Bahamas
From March 12 to 15, the annual “Foreign Language Day” was held at University of the Bahamas, which offers a platform for the students and faculty of major foreign languages to display exotic foreign cultures. It is one of the major cultural events of the university, which the Confucius Institute at the university also actively participated in.
On March 12, at the “International Movie Show” which marked the official commencement of the “Foreign Language Day”, the Confucius Institute showed “Shaolin Temple”, a classic Kung Fu movie featuring authentic and profound Chinese Kung Fu culture. The movie which was starred by Jet Li, the internationally renowned Kung Fu super-star attracted a large number of students.
On the sunny afternoon of March 15, the “International Cultural Show”, the main activity of the “Foreign Language Day” was held at the “Independence Park” inside the campus of the university. The students and faculty of the major foreign languages gave a variety of colorful performances to which the students and faculty of the Confucius Institute also contributed their parts. They sang two Chinese songs “Happy New Year” and “Tian Mimi”. Ms. Liu Dongmei, the Chinese Teach of the Confucius Institute gave a brilliant performance of Chinese Kung Fu Fan. These performances, rich in Chinese cultural elements won the warm applauses from the audience.
The Confucius Institute also set up a display booth on the site of the event, showcasing various Chinese cultural samples and introducing the mandarin courses, summer camp to China, application for Confucius Institute Scholarship, official Chinese proficiency tests and other programs it offers to the students and faculty of the university.
“The Tribune”, a major local newspaper in the Bahamas covered the event and published the photo and caption of the performance given by Ms. Liu, the Chinese teacher of the Confucius Institute.
So far, Chinese has been a major foreign language for the students of the university to choose to learn besides French and Spanish. The Confucius Institute offers credit courses of “Elementary Chinese 1”, “Elementary Chinese 2” and “Intermediate Chinese 1” and various mandarin courses for adult learner and for the faculty and staff of the University. The enthusiasm of learning Chinese has been increasingly evident at the university.
