On the afternoon of July, 6, 2017, a Chinese Tea Culture Experience Event was held by the Confucius Institute at the University of the Bahamas for the executive staff of the university. Prof. Fan Yong, the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute displayed an exquisite Chinese Sand-fired clay tea set and a delicate Chinese white porcelain tea set and explained about the tea sets in detail. The attendants were invited to taste genuine high-grade Biluochun green tea, oolong tea, honeysuckle tea, rose tea, chrysanthemum tea, jasmine tea and other Chinese tea products. Prof. Fan gave a vivid PPT lecture on the origin and historical development of Chinese tea and tea culture, the features and functions of six major types of Chinese tea, the varieties of Chinese tea sets, Chinese tea art and the Chinese etiquette of drinking tea. He also gave a video show of a brilliant performance of Chinese Tieguanyin tea art. The whole event went on in a warm and lively atmosphere. While savoring the different varieties of Chinese tea, the attendants was absorbed in listening to the Chinese tea culture lecture, watching the video show of Chinese tea art performance and appreciating the Chinese tea sets. They marveled at the profound and time-honored Chinese tea culture and also raised a lot of intriguing questions which were answered by Prof. Fan.
This Chinese Tea Culture Experience Event is the experimental part of a six-week long summer mandarin course which is offered for the executive staff of the University of the Bahamas. More than 30 trainees of the course attended the event. The provost of the university, Dr. Linda Davis, who is in charge of the Confucius Institute attended the whole event. She pointed out to Prof. Fan that this was a very meaningful event from which she learned a lot about Chinese tea set. She also suggested that the Confucius Institute should take more opportunities to showcase Chinese tea culture as well as other aspects of Chinese culture to the students and staff of the university of the Bahamas. Other attendants of the event include another vice president of the university, Dr. Pandora-Johnson who is also the trainee of the summer mandarin course as well as the heads of the schools and offices and other executive staff.
